Different customs have always used flowers in wedding ceremonies, and many different types have been utilized. Depending on the location of the wedding and the culture of the bride and groom, the wedding flowers are chosen. In the Roman culture, herbs were carried by the brides to help with fidelity and fertility. In ancient Greece, brides carried ivy that represented eternal love. Buddhist brides used lotus flowers that represent the four virtues of softness, loveliness, scent and purity.
In traditional western culture weddings, there are many different types of flowers used in many areas of the ceremony, the main being the bride’s bouquet and the flower girl’s petals. The significance of the flower girl’s petals stands for renewed life and that the married couple’s life will always be happy.
Traditional bride bouquets consist of two main types, which are posy and nosegay. Both of these types of bouquets have the round traditional shape wrapped or tied with wire stems. They are both easy to carry in one hand and are also good for bridesmaids and flower girls. Nosegay bouquets have greenery and/or herbs, while posy bouquets are only composed of flowers.
Other traditional flowers for weddings that have been used for quite some time are peonies, roses and orchids. Peonies symbolize spring and come in many colors like red, pink and white. Each bloom has many petals. Roses are commonly used in traditional summer weddings, and different types can be combined to create a dramatic bouquet. The commonly used types are garden roses, tea roses, spray roses and Ecuadorian roses. Orchids are tropical flowers and very popular in traditional weddings. They are very fragrant and also make wonderful corsages for the mothers of the bride and groom.
