Recently, my sister called me and told me that her child had homework. Kindergarten homework? What is going on? Come on!
I belong to some online communities and they have verified that their kids have come back home from kindergarten with worksheets that needed to be done as homework. Some of the things looked fun, and the homework was meant more to get the parents concerned in their kids’ education.
Is it really important to give kindergarten homework to get their folks involved? Having a 5 year old to do worksheets seems a little mad. While most kindergarten homework appeared to be fairly simple and observational work, there were some that appeared to be going overboard. One mummy declared that her kid was doing about an hour’s worth of homework almost every night. Should not the 5 year olds be playing and learning in their play kitchens and dress up instead of homework. In first grade I was learning to spell words. Kindergarten was more of an intro to college and rules.
But don’t get me wrong, I am all for teaching kids while they’re most receptive and ready to learn, and the kindergarten age is prime time for this.
Doing homework isn’t something a kindergartener should have to struggle thru rather than playing after a day of faculty.
Are children not children anymore? They’re already growing up too quickly, losing their innocence and attempting to be much older than they actually are.
